Carbide lamps, also known as acetylene gas lamps, are simple lamps that produce and burn acetylene (C2H2) which is created by the reaction of calcium carbide (CaC2) with water. Carbide lamps were also used to illuminate buildings, as lighthouse beacons, and as headlights on cars and bicycles. They are still employed by cavers, hunters, and cataphiles.

The design of a carbide lamp includes two chambers connected with a valve. When the valve is opened, water can drip from the upper chamber into the lower chamber, which is filled with calcium carbide. This causes a chemical reaction which generates acetylene, with the gas flowing out of a nozzle in front of the lamp. The acetylene can be lit with a match or similar device, generating a bright flame. Often, a reflector is mounted on the lamp to scatter the light.

American Miners Carbide Lamps was published in 1987, contains a wealth of information on carbide lamps. Carbide lamps were the main source of illumination for miners from about 1900 to 1950. They were cheap, reliable, and, best of all, they produced a lot of light! These lamps were also used by a variety of outdoor enthusiasts, including hunters, fishermen, and cave explorers.

American Miners Carbide Lamps lists the many brands of carbide lamps that were produced and has photographs and drawings of many of them. Of special interest to the collector, Appendix A gives a list of United States Carbide Lamp patents, arranged by date. Appendix B gives a list of all the known "Brand Names" and rates each brand as to rarity from 1 to 10, with 1 being very common and 10 extremely rare. This is especially valuable to the beginning collector.

This book is hardback, with a dust cover. There are a number of interesting old photos of lamps being used in mines and caves. Very little has been published on American carbide lamps and this is a wonderful source of information.

I love this system used on some of the Gerber multitools. it allows you to replace the worn or damaged wire cutters, by simply removing the 2 screws and either turning it to a new edge or completely replacing them if all the edges are worn. The only shortcoming I can see is that the screw heads are so shallow it is hard for the wrench to get a good grip.

if you are thinking about Tungsten Carbide you can't go wrong with this one. i have the tradiotional 14K set but have developed horrible allergy to it. heard the Tungsten Carbide is better for people like me so i'm giving it a shot. i have worn it exclusively for about a week and so far so good! could have never done that with my white gold set. also it is shiny and beautiful and requires no care so far. even after applying lotions or cooking, whatever just wash your hands and the brilliant shine is back. my gold set would have gotten yucky. geat price too, have seen these at other overstock chains for almost $100. Can't go wrong......Oh, also i wear a womens 5 and it is delicate enough to look good on a petite female.

Once I received this tungsten carbide ring and opened it, oh my, it is much better than on the image, jsut as some review mentioned. To me, it is exactly what I like: a little bit cooler color than white gold, and just right feel of weight, make it looks and feels like a high end ring. Gorgeous!! What a high value ring for such a price. And right, it won't scratch! The feel on finger is very nice, with comfort fit. Perfect!

I ordered this ring on a Sunday and got it on Tuesday, so big points there. The tungsten carbide ring itself is a great color, width, and seems to be of equivalent quailty to the $300+ Tungsten Carbide rings we were looking at in the store. I was wondering what I was sacrificing to get a ring at such a discounted price compared to the in-store rings, and I'm happy to report it's nothing! Yes, you can get a $300 ring for $25 online and it's the exact same thing. We bought a set of thing rings over the summer. We wanted a nice pair of bands, but didn't want to pay through the nose -- I'm constantly taking nitrile gloves on and off, he has to take his ring off to do the dishes or cleaning, because otherwise his eczema will flare up especially during the winter.

We figured if nothing else, it'd be easy to return the rings to amazon.

Too bad the rings are pretty much perfect! They do have a bit of heft to them, and they are a little bulkier than a slimmer band -- my finger was a little bruised the first week of wear, but I got used to it.

The picture does not do this ring justice -- almost a year later, our rings are still just as shiny as they were when we took them out of the box. there's no chips, no scratches -- and these rings have not irritated my husband's nickel allergy.

These are amazingly low priced for the quality -- comparable rings sell for $100-$300 and are of dubious quality. I would buy these rings again any time -- in fact, we're probably going to purchase an extra set, just in case!
